Sub-Zero freezer repair from Carmel to Santa Cruz
Frost on the back wall, soft ice cream, a drawer that no longer pulls itself shut. Freezer faults come from three places: the defrost circuit, the airflow path, and the door. The sealed system is the fourth, and it is the rarest.
An evaporator that cannot shed its frost is not colder. It is warmer, because frost is an insulator and it blocks the air path.
What a frost wall is telling you
The evaporator sits behind the rear panel and runs below freezing, so moisture in the compartment condenses on it as frost. That is normal and expected. A heater under the coil melts it off on a cycle, the water runs to a trough and out to the drain pan. The fault is never that frost forms; the fault is that it stops leaving.
Three things break that cycle, and they get checked in this order:
- The defrost heater. A sheathed element under the coil. Open circuit means no heat at all, and it reads open on a meter in seconds.
- The defrost thermostat or bimetal. It closes when the coil is cold enough to allow the heater to run and opens when the coil has warmed. A bimetal stuck open blocks defrost as completely as a dead heater, and it is a fraction of the cost.
- The control. Adaptive defrost decides how often to run based on door openings and run time. Boards do get this wrong, but they are checked after the two cheap parts, not before.
If all three are healthy, the frost is coming from outside. That means a door or drawer that is not sealing, and on this coast that usually means the hinge or the drawer closing hardware rather than the gasket itself.

We put our own probe in the compartment rather than trusting the display. On older units the display resolution is coarse, and on any unit a drifted thermistor makes the panel confident and wrong.
Half the freezer calls between Seaside and Watsonville are second units in garages that were never designed to be conditioned space.
Freezers that live in a garage
A garage a few hundred yards from the water is the hardest place on this coast to keep refrigeration running. Salt fog comes under the door, the ambient swings twenty degrees between a foggy morning and a clear afternoon, and nobody vacuums a coil they cannot see. Condensers in those rooms corrode two or three times faster than the same coil in a kitchen.
Cold works against them too. In a genuine cold snap, ambient can drop far enough that a single-compressor design stops calling for cooling, and start relays and overloads are least happy when they are cold. A garage freezer that quits in January and works again in March was usually never repaired — it was just warmer.
Drawers and the closing hardware
Bottom-mount freezer drawers rely on a glide system and a closing mechanism that pulls the drawer the last inch. When salt gets into the glides, the drawer stops travelling fully home, and the seal only touches on three sides. That is a frost wall in three weeks. Glides, the closing hardware and the drawer gasket are all replaceable individually.

Either the defrost circuit has stopped clearing the evaporator, or humid air is getting in past a seal and overloading it. Both look identical from the front. The heater, the bimetal and the door all get checked before anything is replaced.

Ice cream is soft but the cubes are rock hard. How?
Cubes hold their shape well below their melting point, so they lie to you. Ice cream is the honest indicator. Soft ice cream with hard cubes almost always means airflow: a blocked evaporator or an evaporator fan that has stopped.

The freezer sits at 10F instead of 0F and will not go lower.
If the condenser is clean and the fans run, a freezer that holds a steady but wrong temperature points at the sealed system, usually a partial loss of charge. A restriction behaves the same way. Both need gauges and a recovery machine, not a thermostat adjustment.

Our garage freezer quit in the middle of a cold snap.
Common on the coast in winter. Cold ambient can stop a single-compressor design from calling for cooling at all, and start components struggle when they are cold. We check the relay and overload before anything expensive.

Can you repair the freezer drawer on a bottom-mount built-in?
Yes. Drawer glides, the drawer gasket and the closing hardware are all serviceable, and a drawer that no longer pulls itself shut is one of the more common causes of a frost wall in a coastal kitchen.
