Sub-Zero wine cooler repair from Carmel to Santa Cruz
Wine storage is ordinary refrigeration held to a tighter tolerance. The failures are the same as a refrigerator's, but the consequences arrive quietly, months before anyone opens a bottle and finds out.
A refrigerator two degrees off is fine. Wine storage two degrees off, for a year, is a different conversation.
The display is not the measurement
Wine wants somewhere near 55F and, more importantly, wants it to stay there. Swing does more harm than a steady offset: expansion and contraction works the cork, and a cellar that runs 52 at night and 64 in the afternoon will push wine past the seal long before anything tastes cooked.
Which is why the first thing we do is ignore the panel. A thermistor that has drifted reads plausibly and confidently, and there is nothing in the unit's behaviour to give it away. We put an independent probe in a water mass on the shelf, leave it, and compare. If the panel and the probe disagree by more than a couple of degrees, the sensor is the job.
Two-zone units add one more question: whether the zones are independent systems or one system with a damper. That decides whether a warm upper zone is a refrigeration fault or an air fault, and it is on the model plate.

The room is half the problem
A great deal of wine on this coast lives in a garage, a below-grade utility room, or a butler's pantry with a door that stays shut. Those rooms sit near saturation for months at a time in a marine climate. The unit will manage its own interior, but its condenser is breathing that room's air, and its cabinet is standing in that room's humidity.
What we see: rack screws rusting, labels going spotty, and a condenser with a damp dust-and-salt film that is far worse for heat rejection than dry dust. If the room has no ventilation, cleaning the coil buys months rather than years.
Where the cabinet is built into millwork, check the clearance the manufacturer's install sheet asks for at the top and behind the grille. A wine unit boxed in with no air path will run continuously through a warm September and then fail in a way that looks like a refrigeration fault and is not.

The display says 55 but the bottles feel warm. Which one is right?
Put a probe in a bottle-shaped mass of water on the shelf and leave it two hours. That reading is the truth. A drifted thermistor will hold a confident display several degrees away from the actual storage temperature, and wine notices long before a person does.

One zone works and the other does not.
On a two-zone unit sharing one sealed system, that is usually the damper or the zone fan rather than the refrigeration. On units with independent systems it can be one system down. Which of those it is depends on the model, so the plate matters.

The unit runs constantly in summer and never has in previous years.
Check clearance and the condenser before anything else. Wine units are frequently built into cabinetry with almost no air path, and once the coil loads up with dust or salt film the machine simply cannot reject heat on a warm afternoon.

We have mould on the labels and rust on the rack screws.
That is the room, not the appliance. Coastal cellars and garages sit at high humidity for months. The unit will hold its own internal humidity, but a below-grade room with no ventilation around the cabinet works against it and against your labels.

Is a vibrating wine unit doing damage?
It is worth investigating. New vibration usually means a compressor mount that has hardened or a fan blade out of balance, and either way the noise is a symptom of something that will get worse. Constant vibration is also the one thing wine storage is specifically designed to avoid.
