What tends to be wrong here
Santa Cruz County splits cleanly in two. Everything within half a mile of the water — West Cliff, the harbour, Pleasure Point, Capitola village, Seacliff and Rio del Mar — behaves like the Monterey Peninsula: corroded condenser fins, hinge cams binding, gaskets losing their set early, and stainless tea-staining at the screw heads.
Everything behind the first ridge behaves like an inland town. Scotts Valley in particular is noticeably kinder to equipment, and units up Trout Gulch out of Aptos are visibly cleaner at the same age than units on the flat below them. When we plan a maintenance interval, that ridge is the line we draw it on.
Two local specifics. First, housing stock: a lot of Santa Cruz houses sit on posts or on older foundations that move, and a cabinet that has racked produces a door gap that widens down one side. That is an alignment problem, and no gasket fixes it. Second, water: the Pajaro Valley supply around Watsonville is hard, which is an ice-maker story rather than a refrigeration story, but it is the reason ice machines here need descaling on a schedule.

Why does Scotts Valley seem so much easier on appliances than Capitola?
A ridge. Six miles inland with high ground between the town and the water, the chloride load drops off sharply. We see condenser fins staying bright there years longer than the same model at sea level in the Capitola village.

Our house is on posts and the refrigerator door gap has changed.
That is worth taking seriously. Houses on the coast move, and a cabinet that has racked will show a gap that gets progressively wider down one side. It is an alignment job before it is a gasket job, and replacing the gasket first solves nothing.

Is the water in Watsonville hard enough to matter?
For ice makers, yes. The Pajaro Valley supply leaves scale, and scale blocks inlet screens and coats clear-ice evaporator plates. On the refrigeration side it makes no difference at all, but it decides how often an ice machine needs descaling.

Do you go up into the Santa Cruz mountains?
The Scotts Valley corridor yes, and Soquel up the creek. Further into the mountains gets impractical for a route that also has to reach the peninsula, and we would rather say that than take a booking we cannot keep.
