01 What it is One closed loop

Compressor, condenser, metering device, evaporator, and the tubing between them. Sealed at the factory, and opened only by cutting into it.

Why a sealed system fails at all

The loop is closed and the refrigerant does not wear out, so a system that has lost charge has lost it through a hole. Holes come from vibration fatigue at a joint, from a factory braze that was marginal, from a service port that has weeped for years, and occasionally on this coast from corrosion working through thin tube where salt-laden condensation sits.

The other failure is a restriction: moisture or debris in the circuit collecting at the metering device, so the refrigerant is there but cannot get round. It presents almost identically to a low charge from the front of the appliance, and completely differently on gauges.

Compressors themselves fail three ways. Windings go open or short, and the meter says so immediately. Start components fail, and the compressor hums and drops out on its overload — a cheap fix that gets mistaken for a dead compressor constantly. Or the compressor turns but no longer develops pressure, which is the slow, ambiguous one and needs gauges to prove.

02 The procedure In order, no shortcuts

Every step here exists because skipping it puts the unit back on the same fault within a season.

  1. Recover the remaining charge

    Into a recovery machine and a cylinder. Nothing gets vented. What comes out also tells us something: an oily, acidic recovery points at a compressor that has run hot, and that changes the parts list.

  2. Find the leak, do not guess it

    Electronic leak detector first, then dry nitrogen to pressure and a soap solution on every joint, and dye only where the first two do not settle it. A leak that is not located is a leak that comes back, and there is no version of this job where "it probably went at the drier" is good enough.

  3. Repair, and replace the filter-drier

    Braze the joint or fit the new component, and fit a new drier every single time the circuit has been open. The drier is a small part whose only job is to hold the moisture that got in while the system was open, and reusing one is how a repaired system turns into a restriction six months later.

  4. Evacuate deep, and hold it

    Vacuum pump on both sides, down to a deep vacuum measured with a micron gauge rather than a compound gauge, then valve off and watch. If the reading climbs and settles, there is still moisture boiling off. If it climbs and keeps climbing, the leak is not fixed. This is the step that separates a repair that lasts from one that does not.

  5. Weigh the charge in

    To the figure on the plate, on a scale. These systems hold ounces, not pounds, and a charge set by pressure and feel is a guess with a decimal point in it. Then run it, check the differential across the evaporator and the pull-down curve, and leave it running long enough to prove it.

03 When we say no The honest cases

Turning down work is part of the job. So is telling you before the parts are ordered rather than after.

Where a sealed-system repair stops making sense

  • A leak in an evaporator buried in foam. Reaching it means opening the cabinet, and on some designs that is not a repair, it is a rebuild.
  • A compressor failure with a badly acidic system. A burnout contaminates the whole circuit, and cleaning it up properly on a domestic built-in is often more work than the outcome supports.
  • A discontinued part with no equivalent. On the oldest units some components are simply gone, and no amount of goodwill sources them.
  • Cabinet corrosion. Rare, but on units that have lived in a garage two hundred yards from the surf for thirty years, the box itself can be the thing that has had enough.

Questions we get on this one

  • How do you know it is the sealed system and not something cheaper?

    Because everything cheaper has been eliminated first: condenser clean, both fans running, defrost circuit tested, door sealing, thermistors compared against a probe. A bare dry evaporator with a running compressor and all of that ruled out is the sealed system.

  • Can you just top it up with refrigerant?

    No. These systems hold a small, precisely weighed charge, and adding gas without finding the leak means the same call in three months with a wetter, dirtier system. If it lost refrigerant, there is a hole, and the hole is the job.

  • Why does it take two visits?

    The leak has to be located before we know which part is involved, and compressors, driers and evaporators are not stocked on a van. Diagnosis, then parts, then the sealed work. We say this at the first visit rather than discovering it later.

  • Is a compressor replacement worth it on an older built-in?

    Often, yes, because the expensive parts of a Sub-Zero built-in are the cabinet, the doors and the panels, and none of those wear out. The honest exception is a unit with a corroded evaporator buried in the foam, where the repair reaches into the cabinet itself.

  • Our unit uses R-600a. Does that change anything?

    Yes. R-600a is isobutane, it is flammable, and the charge, the components and the working practice around it are all different. It is a normal repair, but it is not the same repair, and anyone who does not mention the difference has not read the plate.
