01 The water path Where it actually stops

Follow the water from the house supply to the mould. Nearly every no-ice call is a break somewhere on that line.

Follow the water from the tap to the mould

  1. The supply and the shutoff

    An old saddle valve under the sink or in the basement is the weakest link in the whole system. They clog, they seep, and they are the reason a lot of ice makers stop the same week somebody worked on the plumbing. We check pressure at the tap, not just that the valve turns.

  2. The inlet valve and its screen

    The solenoid valve at the back of the cabinet meters a timed fill. A screen behind the inlet catches grit, and in hard water it catches scale. A partly blocked screen gives short fills and hollow cubes; a valve that no longer seats gives a slow drip that turns into the next fault.

  3. The fill tube

    That drip freezes in the tube, and once it is plugged the fill lands on top of the ice plug and runs down the back wall instead of into the mould. This is the single most common no-ice fault we find. Thawing it fixes the symptom for a week. Replacing the valve fixes the cause.

  4. The module, ejector and bail arm

    The module runs the harvest: it heats the mould slightly, rotates the ejector blades, sweeps the cubes into the bin and drops the bail arm to check the level. Stripped gear teeth stall the cycle halfway. A bail arm held up by a bag of frozen peas stops it entirely, which is a real diagnosis and a free one.

  5. Compartment temperature

    An ice maker will not harvest until the mould thermostat sees its cutout temperature. If the freezer is sitting at 15F because the condenser is choked, the machine simply takes forever. Slow ice with an otherwise healthy machine is a freezer question.

02 Clear-ice machines A different animal

Undercounter clear-ice units make ice by flowing water over a chilled plate, so everything dissolved in the water gets left behind.

Scale is what kills them

A cube ice maker freezes a measured fill and moves on. A clear-ice machine recirculates water over an evaporator plate and only freezes the pure part, which is what makes the ice clear — and which means the minerals stay in the sump and concentrate. Through the Pajaro Valley and around Salinas that water is hard enough to build a visible crust in a season.

Scale does three things, in this order:

  • Insulates the evaporator plate, so harvests get longer and cubes get cloudy.
  • Loads the circulating pump, which then runs hot and eventually stops priming properly.
  • Holds the purge valve off its seat, so the machine stops flushing the sump and the problem compounds.

Descaling on a schedule is not an upsell, it is the whole maintenance story for these units. Once the plate is pitted, cleaning stops helping.

Everything comes out onto a towel first. Ice maker parts are cheap; the diagnosis is what stops the same fault coming back in a fortnight.

Questions we get on this one

  • The ice maker has stopped completely. Where do you start?

    At the fill tube. A water valve that weeps instead of shutting cleanly drips into the tube between fills, the drip freezes, and the next fill has nowhere to go. Thaw the tube and the machine runs again for a week, which is why the valve gets replaced at the same visit.

  • The cubes are hollow or half-size.

    That is fill volume, not freezing. Either the valve is not opening long enough, the inlet screen is blocked with scale, or house pressure at that tap is low. All three are checked at the valve rather than at the ice maker.

  • Ice tastes stale even though we replaced the filter.

    Ice absorbs odour from the freezer and from an old mould that has been sitting between harvests. Dump the bin, run a fresh batch and discard it, and check whether the ice maker is cycling often enough to keep the mould turning over.

  • Our undercounter clear-ice machine has slowed right down.

    Almost always scale on the evaporator plate. Well and municipal water through the Pajaro and Salinas valleys is hard, and a clear-ice machine concentrates whatever is in it. Descaling is maintenance, and skipping it is what eventually costs a pump or a water valve.

  • Does salt air affect an ice maker?

    Indirectly. The ice maker itself is inside the cabinet, but it depends on the freezer holding temperature, and that depends on a condenser breathing salted air. A slow ice maker is often a warm freezer wearing a different face.
